When Should My Child See An Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends scheduling your child’s first orthodontic visit by age 7. By this age, most kids have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, and their jaws are still growing — making it the ideal time to monitor how their smile is developing.
Without early growth monitoring, issues like crowding or bite problems may go unnoticed and become more difficult to treat later on. Early checkups help set the foundation for a healthy, confident smile.

- Early signs of crossbites, open bites, or other bite issues
- Obstructive breathing patterns, like frequent mouth breathing
- Development and positioning of baby and permanent teeth
- Crowding or spacing that could affect how adult teeth come in
- Teeth that may be at higher risk for injury or decay
- Habits like thumb sucking that may impact alignment
- Oral hygiene and general dental health
- Overall facial balance and jaw development

What is Early Orthodontic Treatment?
Early orthodontic treatment — also known as Phase I treatment — isn’t part of our free growth monitoring program, but in some cases, it may help prevent more serious issues from developing later. It can also reduce the complexity or length of treatment needed during the teen years.
At Hendrix Orthodontics, Dr. Hendrix may recommend early treatment when it allows us to take advantage of your child’s natural growth. This early intervention can help:
- Guide proper jaw development
- Reduce the risk of injury to protruding front teeth
- Correct damaging habits like thumb sucking
- Improve overall appearance and boost confidence
- Prevent the need to remove permanent teeth later
- Address bite issues early, such as teeth that don’t meet properly
When needed, Phase I treatment can set the stage for a healthier, more efficient smile transformation in the future.
