Clear Retainers
When braces are ready to come off, most of our patients receive clear retainers. These thin, transparent trays fit snugly over your teeth — similar in appearance to an Invisalign® aligner. Clear retainers are a popular option, especially among adult patients, because they’re affordable, discreet, and easy to wear. Be sure to brush your retainer each time you remove it and before putting it back in to keep it clean and fresh.
Bonded Stabilizing Retainers
Also known as fixed retainers, bonded retainers are often recommended for patients at higher risk of tooth movement after treatment. Made from a slim metal wire that’s cemented to the back of your lower front teeth, this retainer stays in place 24/7 to help prevent shifting.
Fixed retainers are very effective and low-maintenance, but they do require special care — you’ll need to use a floss threader to keep the area clean. If your bonded retainer becomes loose, just reach out to our office to schedule a quick repair.
Keep in mind that bonded retainers only stabilize the front 4 – 6 teeth, so we always pair them with clear retainers to ensure your entire smile stays in place. Not everyone is a candidate for a bonded retainer, so Dr. Hendrix will guide you through your best options.
