Metal braces have been the go-to solution for straightening teeth for generations — and thanks to modern advancements, they’re now more comfortable and efficient than ever. Our team continually trains in the latest techniques to ensure you get the best possible results.

Crafted from durable metal alloys and paired with elastic ties, traditional braces work by gently guiding your teeth into the right position. And with a wide selection of band colors to choose from, you can customize your smile along the way — making treatment as fun as it is effective.

Clear or ceramic braces offer a more subtle way to straighten your teeth — using tooth-colored or translucent brackets that blend in with your smile. Just like traditional metal braces, ceramic braces work to gradually align your teeth, but with a more discreet look that many adults (and even teens) prefer. You can also choose colored elastics for a fun, personalized touch throughout treatment.

Looking for something even more low-profile? Hendrix Orthodontics also offers Invisalign® clear aligners — a flexible option that makes brushing, flossing, and eating even easier. Dr. Hendrix has extensive experience with Invisalign treatment, and the cost is typically comparable to braces, making it a great choice for many patients in Kennett Square and West Grove.

Damon braces, available in both clear ceramic and metal styles, offer a modern alternative to traditional braces. Using self-ligating technology — which means no elastic ties are needed — these braces apply gentle, continuous pressure to move teeth efficiently and comfortably. Many patients at Hendrix Orthodontics find that Damon braces not only feel better but may also shorten overall treatment time compared to conventional braces.

From my daughter's first visit to her unexpected last, Dr. Hendrix and his team have been nothing short of amazing! They are incredibly friendly and genuinely care about their patients, which is evident the moment you walk in. My daughter was pleasantly surprised when it turned out it was time for her braces, and the team handled everything seamlessly. Ashlynn did an outstanding job throughout the process. We left with a retainer and a smile! Highly recommend Dr. Hendrix Orthodontics for anyone looking for top-notch care.

We've been going to the Jennersville office for almost 2 years now for my oldest daughter and have been so impressed with the care of Dr. Hendrix and his team. Today my youngest worked with Nicole getting her braces put on and she did such an amazing job helping her overcome the anxiety. She was so incredibly patient and I'm incredibly grateful to her and the whole office for making this experience a good one!

What foods should I avoid while I have braces?

Good news — the list of off-limit foods with braces is shorter than you might think! Still, avoiding certain items helps protect your brackets and wires while keeping your treatment on track. Here’s what to skip (or modify):

  • Chewy foods like taffy, beef jerky, or bagels
  • Crunchy foods such as raw carrots, chips, celery, and popcorn
  • Sticky foods, including caramel, marshmallows, and licorice
  • Hard foods like hard candy, dense breadsticks, or pizza crust
  • Foods you bite into like apples or corn on the cob — though you can still enjoy them by slicing them up or removing the kernels first

With a few simple adjustments, you can still enjoy a varied and satisfying diet while wearing braces!

How do I brush my teeth with braces?

Start by rinsing your mouth with water to help loosen any food particles caught around your brackets and wires. When brushing, angle your toothbrush at 45 degrees toward the gum line. Then, carefully brush above and below each bracket to make sure the bristles reach around the wires and clean thoroughly.

Brushing when you have braces may take a little longer at first, but it quickly becomes second nature. After brushing, follow up with flossing. You’ll need to take your time and use a special technique to avoid loosening any brackets or wires — and don’t worry, Dr. Hendrix will show you exactly how to do it during your visit.

Are braces painful? How do I ease the discomfort?

Braces aren’t typically painful, but it’s common to feel some soreness or sensitivity right after they’re first placed or adjusted. This mild discomfort is normal and usually fades within a few days.

To ease the soreness, try rinsing with warm saltwater — dissolve one teaspoon of salt in a cup of lukewarm water and swish for a few minutes. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can also help if needed. And if your lips, cheeks, or tongue feel irritated from rubbing against the brackets, orthodontic wax provides quick relief and added comfort.

How long will I need to wear braces?

The length of time you'll wear braces depends on a few factors, including the complexity of your bite and alignment needs. Most patients wear braces for about 12 – 24 months, though your treatment could be shorter or longer depending on your individual case.

We will walk you through your expected timeline during your consultation, and as treatment progresses, we’ll be able to give you more accurate updates based on your results and smile goals.
