13. How have new "high tech" wires changed orthodontics?

High Tech BracesIn recent years, several important advances in orthodontic materials have taken place. Braces are much smaller and more efficient at moving teeth than in past years. The wires currently used are made of "high tech" alloys of nickel, titanium, copper, and cobalt. Some of the wires are even heat-activated (NASA originally engineered the nickel-titanium alloy to automatically activate antennae or solar panels of spacecraft orbiting into the sun's rays). These fabulous new advances in technology allow the teeth to move continually in a more gentle fashion, which may dramatically reduce treatment time and the number of appointments necessary to straighten your teeth.
